Ad Campaign: Burger King

So I did Chick-fil-A and McDonald’s. Now it is time for Burger King. Burger King is known for their Whopper. Everyone knows that. The Whopper is usually the highlighted item in their advertising as well. That is what they want to sell. I have come across quite a few advertisements for Burger King and I will post my favorites.

This one is comparing the Whopper to a Big Mac. Obviously, the Whopper is bigger.

bk

This one is also comparing the two, but this advertisement does not use any extra words to get their point across. The Whopper still wins. Hands down.

bk4

Now, Burger King does advertise their other menu items, just not as often as the Whopper. This ad is for the Chicken Royale Sandwich. If you look close enough, the steam coming off the sandwich  makes a picture of what looks to be a lady, maybe a queen? Either way, that is creative.

bk2

This sandwich will “blow your mind away”. That must mean it is good. The image of the girl even looks like her mind is blown and she has not even taken a bite of the sandwich yet. Burger King says, “It just tastes better.”

bk5

This next advertisement is a little bit different. It says, “Taste the win” and has hands with the “rock, paper, scissors”  movements. So no matter what you decide to play, you will always win. This burger, probably a Whopper, is what you win.

bk8

The next two ads I found are for their breakfast items.

bk6

This one is for their delicious Cinnabon cinnamon rolls that you can get for just $1.

bk7

And this one if for their new muffin sandwich and breakfast bowl. They want you to, “shake up your wake up” with this new breakfast sandwich or new breakfast bowl. What better way to start the day, right?

Lastly, I have an older advertisement. He looks like Bill Cosby, but I am not too sure. But, the, “Have it your way” gets doubled now with the new double meat burger. Still delicious with twice the meat.

bk3

Burger King has some great ads out there, but I wish they would be more diverse in what product they are advertising. Almost all the Google images that came up were for the Whopper. Okay, I get it, the Whopper is their best menu item, but come on, shed some light on those other menu items.

Ad Campaign: McDonald’s

Let’s face it. Everyone has that craving for McDonald’s. Who doesn’t love that dollar menu and their food full of calories?? I absolutely love those chicken mcnuggets. 🙂 Well, let’s see how their advertising stands in the big world full of other fast food chain restaurants. I already did a blog post on Chick-fil-A and plan to do more on other fast food chains. Not only do they advertise their new menu/deals on their own sign, but they also have some great billboards and commercials. Even their trucks have fries on them!

I will start with the billboards.

You can see the first two are about their fries.

This one is the McDonald’s truck with the fries flying out of their holder.

This billboard is actually really neat. It is a sundial and each image has a time on it. When the McDonald’s sign hits that time, then you should eat that item.

I found a blog that explains this technique in more detail. Leo Burnett made this sundial and here is a video of it in action outside of Wrigley Field.

This one mentions the (then) new iced frappe.

mcds5

“This sandwich is so good that you want to eat the billboard!”

And lastly, here is one that mentions what your $1 can get you on the dollar menu.

mcds2

Notice that every single billboard has their logo on it? That is a MUST in advertising.

Also, McDonald’s will advertise for their Monopoly game they do every year. Here is a commercial from 2011:

All in all, I think McDonald’s does a great job advertising their food and their promotional items like the Monopoly game.

Ad Campaign: Chick-fil-A

Everyone knows Chick-fil-A. Everyone. So I decided to shed some light on their advertising, specifically, the cows. When I think of Chick-fil-A, I automatically think of the cows. The cow campaign started in 1995 and has since taken off to reach millions. They have produced some great 3-D billboards, along with some funny commercials. I am just going to focus on the billboards.

I will start with the standing cows carrying a sign.

cowsThis is their slogan carried by the cows. When you see this, you think Chick-fil-A and you do not have to think twice. This slogan has become very popular with them and I do not see it going anywhere anytime soon. Below are some more cow advertisements. All of them are saying the chicken is better than beef.chick21

Next, we have a cow that advertises a free chicken sandwich. The catch? You have to dress like a cow. This is a popular day for Chick-fil-A and grabs a lot of attention. You will see tons of people dressing up like a cow just to get some free chicken. They even have their own cow mascot who comes around the restaurant and interacts with the children. cowcostume

And now we have their infamous billboards.

Chick-fil-A-Spicy-Chickenchickfila1a

The first one is advertising their new spicy chicken sandwich and the cows are firefighters because that is what you will need to put that fire out of your mouth. The second one is for their delicious shakes. All you need to wash down that chicken is a shake and they have a few flavors to choose from.  The third is just one of those funny ones you see while driving on the interstate. It says if you eat beef, you will fall asleep and that is not good when driving long distances. Notice the sleeping cows??sleeping cows

Lastly on the billboards, they do seasonal ones. Here are a couple from Christmas time.

BR billboard cows copychristmas cows

The first one is a play off the lyrics, “the weather outside is frightful” from the song, “Let It Snow”. The second one is the cows being santa and his reindeer. Add chicken to your wish list and Santa is sure to come.

I love Chick-fil-A and I love those cows. It would be a sad day if they retired. Notice the cows’ spelling?? That’s what makes it more realistic to me. If you want to read another blog post on this cow campaign, go here.

Ad Campaign: Budweiser

I enjoyed researching and finding the right ads/commercials for Eukanuba, so I think I’ll make a habit of it…at least for now. I have chosen the company, Budweiser. Now, I do not actually like the beer itself, but I love the ads. (See my Top 12 Super Bowl Ads-you will find a couple of Budweiser ads on there.) One of the campaigns I like is the “Patriotic” campaign. I could not find any commercials to go with it, but I did find this great article about it. I hope you will read it. I will only mention a couple of campaigns here, starting with the most popular, the “Whassup” campaign based off the short film, True. Here is another blog post that explains the “Whassup” campaign.

Here are the top “Whassup” commercials:

This is one of the first commercials aired in 1999.

Read the “about” section under the video. It mentions the campaign in general and that it ran from 1999-2002.

This is the most popular “Whassup” commercial.

And, lastly, here is another one that is also one of the greats.

Another campaign, and one of my favorites, involved the Clydesdales. I don’t know about you, but I just love those horses. The commercials they made with them are incredible! Here are a few of my favorites:

This one is entitled, “Family” and it is from the 2006 Super Bowl:

This one has the donkey in it who dreams of being a Budweiser Clydesdale.

And this one is one of my favorites because it tributes 9/11.

Of course, I already mentioned a couple of other ones in my previous blog post about my Top 12 Super Bowl commercials. Those 2 are favorites of mine, titled “Hank the Clydesdale” and “Return of the King”. I refer back to it in the beginning of this blog post.

If you want to see print advertisements, their website has a legacy page with them on there dating back to the 1890s.

Here are a few of them:

They also have the organizations they support as well!

Hope you enjoy these ad campaigns. Check back for more!

Ad Campaign: Eukanuba

Alright, so now I am transitioning into favorite advertising campaigns. One of those being Eukanuba‘s Everybody Wants to be a Dog. Leo Burnett advertising agency (he’s pretty famous in the ad world) did this campaign for them. Eukanuba published several different print ads with the phrase, “Everybody Wants to be a Dog” and they are great ads; very funny. I also like some of the other advertisements they have published as well. I will start with the campaign.

Here are 5 of their published print ads.

Eukanuba BirdEukanuba CatEukanuba TortoiseEukanuba RabbitEukanuba Cat

Each one of these is unique in its own way. First, the cat should not urinate on the tire like a dog would. Second, the bird does not bring the paper in through the doggie door. Third, rabbits do not hunt. Fourth, turtles do not go for walks and fifth, cats hate water and would never fetch a stick (I have cats at home and know this for a fact).

Eukanuba also had commercials produced as well.

Here is one from 2011 titled, “See No Limits”

The dogs who eat Eukanuba see no limits in their lives. It is a simple, yet astounding video.

Here is another one, and one of my favorites, titled, “Fetch”. Saatchi & Saatchi produced this video.

In this commercial, they trained dogs to walk around with a bag of Eukanuba dog food in their mouth. It is also simple, but it gets their attention.

I will now close with 3 more advertisements that are just plain funny.

catshoemailman

Hope you enjoy those as much as I do. They took pieces of dog food and made characters out of them that a dog just loves. Hence, the mail man running away, the cat looking scared and the shoe all untied.

My Top 12 Super Bowl Ads

Well, I told you I would write a post containing my top advertisements for the Super Bowl and here they are. I put them in order starting with my all time favorite.

#1. The Force: Volkswagon

I like this one just because it is funny. It has a sort of character to it.

#2. Doritos: Man’s Best Friend

This one is just funny. I mean, the way the dog uses a bag of Doritos to keep his owners’ mouth shut about the cat.

#3. Budweiser: Hank the Clydesdale

This one shows some down-right determination and I like it. Also, I just love the Clydesdales.

#4. Bud Light: Here We Go

This one is just a cute dog commercial. Simple as that.

#5. Mars: MMS

This is the ad that started it all with the “naked” chocolate. It’s funny, yet simple.

#6. Volkswagon: The Dog Strikes Back

This car ad also shows some determination on the dog’s part. It is just adorable how the dog does everything in his power to get back in shape just to chase the new Volkswagon. I also like how in the end it flashes back to the Darth Vader (#1) commercial.

#7. Coca-Cola: Polar Bears

This one shows the notorious Coca-Cola polar bears being anxious about the game. And what helps him out but a nice, cold refreshing Coca-Cola.

#8. Coca-Cola: Polar Bears “Catch”

This is just a funny one with the polar bears. It goes with the previous one.

#9. Budweiser: Return of the King

This commercial displays the importance of Budweiser.

#10. Marvel: The Avengers

Because this is not your typical commercial for a company, I like it. It set the stage for The Avengers movie.

#11. E*Trade: Baby

This is the commercial that sparked the controversy with Lindsey Lohan. It is a good commercial and I think it will always be one the “greats”.

and lastly….

#12. Suzuki: Sled

This commercial, featuring 50 Cent, puts a whole new meaning on the new Suzuki.

I hope you liked these commercials as much as I did. I could watch them over and over again and still laugh. I am looking forward to see what this Super Bowl’s commercials will bring. (and who knows, maybe I will post my Top 10 from this year…)

Super Bowl line up begins

So, I’m not a big fan of football. I mean, come on, they chase a ball around and tackle each other. And I never understood why they run towards other players. Why not run around them? Makes more sense to me to do it that way, but whatever. The only thing I understand is that when they cross that line, they get 6 points and getting it through the thing is 1 point. The only game I care about is the Super Bowl and that is for the commercials. I won’t even pick a team to root for. My theory is to go for the one that wins. 🙂

With that being said, Ad Age has so very kindly put up an article about the ad line up. Here is what they say:

CBS has more or less sold out its ad inventory for its coming broadcast of Super Bowl XLVII at prices averaging between $3.7 million and $3.8 million, according to ad buyers.

They even mentioned some of the celebrities that will be in them:

Celebrities and pseudo-celebs on the ad roster will include Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Psy, Kate Upton, Usher, Danica Patrick and Kaley Cuoco from “The Big Bang Theory.”

The website also gives a list of which companies have already purchased a spot and they gave a little insight into what might be expected.

The usual companies you see every year are, again, returning. Those being, Coca-Cola, Bud Light, Pepsi, Axe and GoDaddy.com. Then you have the usual car companies: Toyota, Volkswagon, Chrysler and Ford. This is not the complete list. I just picked a few.

I always look forward to the commercials and it seems like a good line up so far. I hope you enjoy the commercials as much as I do. (I’ll post my favorite Super Bowl Commercials later!)

School and graduation and jobs…oh my!

So, tomorrow is my last first day of school…ever! (Unless I go to grad school which will be a year or so down the road). It is a bittersweet feeling. I will miss college, but I will not miss the crazy schedules. I am a set-in-stone-schedule kind of gal. But, not only is it the first day of school for me, but it also happens to be my birthday and it is supposed to be cold and rainy. How awful is that? I mean, it is supposed to snow back home in north Mississippi! Why can’t it snow in south Mississippi? Darn this crazy weather!

Anyway, this semester should be my easiest one yet. I already took 3 hours as a mini session last week (see the social media post). I only have 7 hours the first 8 weeks and 8 hours the second 8 weeks. Not too shabby. I will start my capstone class. Yay! And I am taking a Public Relations class to help with my advertising career since the two go hand in hand. The other classes are just electives, with one being first aid so I can officially be certified. It will look good since I work with kids all the time. 🙂

I am looking forward to this semester though. It is amazing how time flies in college. I feel like just yesterday I was graduating high school and starting my first day as a freshman, and now I am in my last semester and about to graduate college! So much left to do though…still need to get on that job hunt (the senioritis is starting to kick in). I want to get out of the state of Mississippi. I need somewhere with a more stable climate…or the east coach beach…whichever works. I am ready for my “big girl” job though. It is exciting and scary at the same time. I just hope I can be one of those lucky ones that will get a job shortly after graduation. (hint, hint to the advertising people reading this; keep me posted on ANY job openings)

Well, I hope those of you that are in school are enjoying it. Treasure the moments now because time does fly on by! My advice? Don’t spend all your time studying. Take a break and hang out with some friends. Do something for yourself every now and then and procrastinate a tiny bit.

Lisa 🙂

Social Media

As you know, I am a student at Southern Miss. I created this blog for my mini session class, MCJ 480, or Seminar in Journalism: Social Media Success. I have really enjoyed this class so far. We spent all day yesterday setting up Twitter accounts (and crashing Twitter!) and linking that to HootSuite (crashed that site too!). You can follow me on Twitter (@lisagurley) and I will probably follow you back. If you go to Southern Miss and love social media, I highly recommend this class. Dr. Gina Chen is an awesome professor!

I am an Advertising student, but social media is a big part of any career choice, not just mass communications. If you love advertising, check out the other blogs on my blog roll as well. You can also follow me on Pinterest and check out my Advertising board.

Social media is a great thing to be involved with and it really connects you to others with similar interests. I have a Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Pinterest, and now a blog. I’m not big on Twitter, but I will try to “tweet” as much as I can. Personally, the best way to contact me is through my email address. If you don’t have social media accounts, I recommend you establish one or two or three. I think it really helps with the endless job hunt I am on.

Anyway, hope you enjoy this crazy blog.

About me

Me at a kids' birthday party.

Me at a kids’ birthday party.

me with a "flower"...gotta make that wish!

me with a “flower”…gotta make that wish!

I’m Lisa if you haven’t figured that out by  now. I am from Hernando, Miss. (that’s just south of Memphis). I started this blog for one of my classes so we shall see how this goes. I am a senior advertising student at Southern Miss down in Hattiesburg, Miss. I am the treasurer of the American Advertising Federation, or AAF and I am the Design Editor for The Student Printz. I am currently on the job hunt.

I have 3 part-time jobs here. As I said, I am the Design Editor of our student newspaper, The Student Printz, I keep the little kiddos at Westminster Presbyterian Church, and I am a hostess at T.G.I. Friday’s. It may seem like a lot, but I love them all.

I love the design aspect of Advertising. That is what I want to do in my field. I have given a thought to menu designing for T.G.I. I have also given a thought into doing the posters, brochures, and pamphlets for the military. I come from a military background and would like to keep that connection going even after I graduate. I am basically up for anything with design and I will move anywhere. I can only handle so much of this crazy Mississippi weather.

I like to have fun, hang out with friends, read those non-educational books, and just relax. One of my goals in life is to collect all the Disney classics by the time I am 30. And let me tell you, I have quite the collection going.

I hope you enjoy my blog about my life as a college student.
